An 8-year-old girl tragically died after suffering a medical emergency on a SkyWest regional flight from Joplin, Missouri, to Chicago. The young girl, identified as Sydney Weston, experienced the emergency mid-flight, prompting a diversion to Peoria International Airport, as reported by the New York Post.

United flight 5121, operated by SkyWest, had departed Joplin at 5:51 a.m. on the fateful day. Midway through the journey, Sydney's condition necessitated immediate medical attention, leading the crew to make the urgent decision to divert the flight to Peoria. CBS Chicago reported that emergency responders met the plane upon landing, with deputies, American Medical Technologists personnel, and Air National Guard Fire personnel performing life-saving measures in a desperate attempt to save Sydney.

Despite these efforts and aggressive resuscitative attempts, Sydney ultimately died at OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center. According to the New York Post, the girl succumbed to her condition after being taken to the hospital.

SkyWest expressed profound appreciation for the efforts of their crew members and the responding medical personnel. “We commend the quick action taken by everyone involved and are deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” a SkyWest spokesperson stated, according to CBS Chicago.
