A Queens man was charged with attempted murder early Saturday after allegedly trying to drown his two young children at a Connecticut beach, rescued in a heroic effort by police and firefighters.

Romney Desronvil was detained at West Haven beach around 2:30 a.m. following a dramatic rescue effort. Desronvil, reportedly driven by personal turmoil, had taken his children, both under 3 years old, into the ocean. Officers and firefighters, responding to the scene, managed to save the children who are now in critical but improving condition at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. The rapid intervention, credited with saving their lives, was lauded by local officials, though three officers sustained minor injuries during the rescue.

According to West Haven Police, an officer on patrol first noticed Desronvil's SUV parked unusually at the beach. The situation quickly turned dire as the officer heard intense screaming from the water. Upon closer inspection, the officer saw Desronvil in the water with the children. Despite the officer's attempts to intervene, Desronvil took the children further out to sea and yelled at the officer to stay back.

Responding officers and firefighters quickly mobilized after receiving the call for help. They formed a human chain, entering the water in a coordinated effort, which was further supported by the use of a fire boat. This concerted action was instrumental in ensuring the children were brought back to shore safely.

The children were immediately transported to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, where they arrived in critical condition. Medical staff have since reported that their condition is improving, a positive sign that has brought some relief amidst the harrowing circumstances.

West Haven Police Chief Joseph Perno and Mayor Dorinda Borer commended the officers and firefighters for their bravery and quick actions. Chief Perno specifically praised the teamwork displayed by the West Haven Police Department, the West Shore Fire Department, and the New Haven Police Department, which was essential in saving the children's lives.

During the rescue efforts, three West Haven officers sustained minor injuries. The precise nature of these injuries was not disclosed, but officials have confirmed that they are not life-threatening.

In his first court appearance, Romney Desronvil was held on a $2 million bail. Court documents revealed that during his arrest, Desronvil allegedly confessed to the crime. He cited a turbulent relationship with the children’s mother as the reason behind his actions.

The children's mother, who resides in New York, rushed to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital as soon as she was informed of the incident. Her presence at the hospital has been a critical comfort to the young children as they recover.

The case has put a spotlight on the quick response capabilities of local law enforcement and emergency services. The successful rescue was the result of a well-coordinated effort between multiple agencies, emphasizing the importance of inter-departmental collaboration in crisis situations.
