Disney Genie Update Grants Three Less Wishes!
In a bid to sprinkle more fairy dust on visitor planning, Walt Disney World is rebranding its Genie+ to 'Lightning Lane Multi Pass' starting July 24, but some guests are feeling more Grumpy than Happy about the change.
The rebranding effort, set to begin on July 24, introduces 'Lightning Lane Multi Pass,' allowing guests to reserve rides and shows in advance and promising more streamlined vacation planning. Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels get the perk of booking up to seven days ahead, while others can book three days in advance. Despite the intention to enhance the experience, the change has sparked confusion and frustration among Disney enthusiasts, especially annual pass holders, who feel the system adds complexity and curtails their usual spontaneity.
Additionally, there will be a new option called 'Lightning Lane Single Pass,' which replaces the individual Lightning Lane entry. This option allows guests to make up to two selections per day for some of Disney World's most popular attractions. According to Disney, this change was implemented in response to guest feedback, with many visitors requesting more pre-planning capabilities to maximize their time in the parks. After all, who doesn't love a good plan to conquer a theme park like a boss?
However, the new system has been met with mixed reviews. Annual pass holders, in particular, have taken to social media to voice their concerns. Many of them feel disadvantaged by the new rules, which limit non-resort guests to booking their ride selections only three days in advance. 'It’s hard enough to get the fast passes we want as it is,' wrote one annual pass holder on Twitter. 'Now we have even less of a chance!' Another user quipped, 'Guess I’ll need a fairy godmother to get a spot on Space Mountain now!'
In an effort to address some of these concerns, Disney has promised that its app and website are also getting updates to make planning and purchasing easier. The aim is to provide a more user-friendly interface that streamlines the process of selecting and reserving attractions. 'We are listening to our guests,' a Disney spokesperson said. 'These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to improve the overall guest experience.' Now, if only the Pirates of the Caribbean ride could be as accommodating with its boarding process!
One of the highlights of the new 'Lightning Lane Multi Pass' is that it will include additional attractions like 'Tiana’s Bayou Adventure,' which is set to open on June 28. This new feature is expected to be a major draw for guests, offering them the opportunity to experience the latest Disney magic without waiting in long lines—a true theme park dream come true.
The pricing for both the 'Lightning Lane Multi Pass' and the 'Lightning Lane Single Pass' will vary depending on the date and the park. Disney has clarified that there will be no price increase associated with the transition from Genie+ to Lightning Lane, much to the relief of many guests who feared a hike in costs. This ensures that families can still enjoy the perks of advanced planning without needing to allocate additional budget for their trip. Perhaps the real magic here is finding a Disney feature that doesn't cost extra!
Even as Disney World makes these changes, the park's sister location, Disneyland, will adopt the new names for Disney Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes but will not alter their operation. So, while the lingo might sound fancy and new, Californian park-goers won't have to learn a new trick to navigate the booking system. Same old, same old!
