NYT Best-Selling Author and 'Jeopardy!' Champion Brendan DuBois Charged with Child Sex Pornography
New York Times best-selling author Brendan DuBois was arrested on charges of child pornography, facing six felony counts and held without bail after a disturbing investigation revealed over 5,600 incriminating images.
The arrest of the acclaimed author, best known for his 'Lewis Cole' mystery series, followed a detailed investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. Authorities unearthed thousands of explicit images from DuBois' devices after a cyber tip from Google spurred the probe. While DuBois pleaded not guilty, his publisher has suspended all promotions of his works, and a judge is considering a bail request amidst mounting public scrutiny.
Brendan DuBois, who has penned 26 critically acclaimed novels and collaborated with notable authors like James Patterson, turned himself into the Exeter Police Department following an arrest warrant issued based on the findings of the investigation. DuBois stands charged with six felony counts of possession of child sex abuse images, to which he has entered a plea of not guilty. He is currently held without bail in preventative detention as the legal process unfolds.
The investigation that led to DuBois's arrest began in March when a cyber tip from Google was reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip indicated the potential presence of child sexual abuse material associated with DuBois's online activities. This information prompted the involvement of the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, which spearheaded the deep dive into DuBois's digital possessions.
A search warrant executed at DuBois's home on May 7 resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices, including a hard drive and a laptop. Forensic examination of these devices uncovered at least 35 explicit visual representations of children and flagged over 5,600 images as potential child abuse content. His search history further corroborated these findings, revealing terms related to child pornography and Google Drive.
During the course of the investigation, DuBois's wife provided statements indicating that they maintained separate computers and a private, locked WiFi network. Authorities, however, did not comment on the extent to which this separation may affect the case.
DuBois's legal representation is being handled by attorney Harry Starbranch of Starbranch Law. As the case progresses, a judge has taken a request for bail under advisement, although it is yet to be determined whether DuBois will be released pending trial.
In light of the serious charges, Severn River Publishing, DuBois's publisher, has promptly suspended all promotion and sales of his books. The decision reflects the gravity of the allegations and the potential impact on DuBois's professional reputation.
Several prominent figures and organizations have taken notice of the case, though Exeter Police Chief Stephan R. Poulin has stated that the police would make no further comments at this time.
DuBois's illustrious career includes appearances on the game show 'Jeopardy!' in 2012 and receiving numerous literary awards such as three Shamus Awards, two Barry Awards, and three nominations for the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award. Despite these achievements, the current charges cast a shadow over his accomplishments and future in the literary world.
