More than four decades after Susan Leigh Wolfe was brutally murdered, DNA evidence has led to the arrest of 78-year-old Deck Brewer Jr., who has been charged in connection with her abduction and killing.

The long-awaited breakthrough in Wolfe's cold case underscores the advancements in forensic science and the relentless pursuit of justice. Wolfe was kidnapped and murdered in 1980, and despite extensive investigations over the years, it took until April 2023 for DNA evidence to link Brewer to the crime. With a staggering probability of Brewer's DNA match being nearly infallible, authorities hope this development will finally provide answers and closure for Wolfe's family, while the investigation into a possible second suspect remains ongoing.

On January 9, 1980, Wolfe was walking to a friend's house when she was kidnapped in broad daylight. The incident was a shock to the community, and her body was discovered the following morning. Investigators revealed that Wolfe had been sexually assaulted, strangled, and shot, prompting a thorough investigation that spanned several decades.

Over the years, investigators tracked down more than 40 persons of interest and interviewed at least six suspects, but no arrests were made at the time. Witness testimonies indicated that a car, described as a 1970 Dodge Polara, was involved in the abduction. A witness recounted seeing Brewer stop his car and grab Wolfe in what was described as a 'bear hug' before forcing her into the vehicle.

The case went cold, yet the Austin Police Department Cold Case Unit did not abandon their efforts. In April 2023, they submitted DNA evidence connected to Wolfe's murder to the Texas Department of Public Safety's Crime Laboratory. This submission was pivotal, as it led to a match through the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

The forensic analysis indicated that Brewer's DNA had a probability of being incorrect at approximately 1 in 550.5 quintillion, reinforcing the strength of the evidence. Investigators quickly identified Brewer as a significant suspect in the case, leading to further inquiries into his background.

At the time charges were brought against Brewer, he was already incarcerated in Massachusetts on unrelated charges. This fact complicated the timeline of the investigation but did not hinder investigators from pursuing justice for Wolfe. On August 14, 2024, the Austin Municipal Court officially issued an arrest warrant for Brewer, signifying a major step forward in the case that had remained unsolved for over four decades.

Despite the significant development with the arrest, officials have stated that the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities are currently seeking information regarding a possible second suspect, indicating that they believe other individuals may have been involved in Wolfe's abduction and murder. This continued effort illustrates the determination of law enforcement to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice.

The long-standing impact of Wolfe's murder resonates throughout the community and among advocates for victims' rights. Family members and friends of Wolfe have expressed their hope that this new evidence will bring clarity and closure after years of uncertainty and grief. As the case unfolds, many will be watching to see how the legal process progresses against Brewer and if further developments will emerge relating to additional suspects.
