Homeless New Orleans Student Graduates as Valedictorian, Defying All Odds
Elijah Hogan, a remarkable student from New Orleans, has defied the odds by graduating as valedictorian from Walter L. Cohen High School, despite facing significant challenges, including homelessness. Living in a homeless shelter, Elijah managed to excel academically and will soon embark on a new chapter at Xavier University of Louisiana.
Hogan's story is one of resilience and determination. He achieved an impressive 3.93 GPA while living at Covenant House, a homeless shelter in New Orleans. His graduation speech on May 24, 2024, was a heartfelt thank-you letter to the school and community that supported him throughout his journey.
Elijah's path to success was far from easy. His mother passed away when he was only eight years old, leading him to end up at Covenant House before his senior year of high school. Despite these challenges, Hogan remained focused on his education, using the support of key figures in his life to drive him forward. He specifically thanked Jana DeCoster—the director of student activities at Cohen High School—and Jarkayla Cobb, his case worker at Covenant House, during his valedictorian speech.
Hogan is also an aspiring artist, planning to major in graphic design at Xavier University of Louisiana. The university has recognized his potential, offering him tuition assistance, though Elijah has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover additional expenses such as housing and other living costs.
In his graduation speech, Hogan emphasized the importance of staying focused on education to overcome life's hardships. "Stay focused and determined," he encouraged others, highlighting that perseverance can lead to success, regardless of the obstacles faced.
Through his determination, Elijah Hogan has not only achieved academic excellence but also inspired many by demonstrating that perseverance and a support system can lead to remarkable achievements, even in the face of adversity.
The future looks bright for Elijah as he prepares to start his new journey at Xavier University, bringing with him a story of strength, resilience, and hope.
