NYU Freshman Sues Roommate Over $50,000 Luxury Items Theft
NYU freshman Aurora Agapov is suing her roommate Kaitlyn Fung, who has been arrested and charged with grand larceny, for allegedly stealing and selling more than $50,000 worth of luxury items.
The dispute erupted after Agapov discovered on May 1, 2024, a receipt linking Fung to a luxury consignment store, The RealReal. Fung admitted to the theft, revealing she had sold high-end items like Chanel jewelry on the platform. The situation escalated to police involvement when Agapov reported the theft, resulting in Fung’s arrest the following day. The lawsuit seeks over $20,000 in damages for sold items and approximately $31,000 in unsold luxury goods allegedly pilfered by Fung.
Among the items allegedly stolen and sold were a Chanel Strauss bracelet and a Bvlgari necklace. The bracelet was sold for $175, and the necklace fetched $2,485, both amounts significantly under their market value. The unsold stolen items, which include a Solange Azagury 18K ruby ring, a Celine Nanno tote, and a Chanel purse, are valued at approximately $31,000.
Aurora Agapov discovered the theft when she found a receipt written to Kaitlyn Fung from The RealReal, a luxury consignment store. When confronted by Agapov, Fung admitted to the theft and showcased a list of items she had put up for sale on her RealReal account. The list included high-end luxury goods such as a Solange Azagury 18K ruby ring, a Celine Nanno tote, and a Chanel purse. Further investigations also revealed that the sold items included a Chanel Strauss bracelet and a Bvlgari necklace, which were sold for significantly less than their market value.
Immediately after confirming the theft, Agapov reported the incident to the NYPD on May 2. Fung was subsequently arrested the same day and faces charges of grand larceny, according to a spokesperson for the police. The RealReal, where the stolen items were consigned, has stated that none of the stolen goods are currently in their possession and that they are cooperating with law enforcement.
In light of the incident, it was revealed that unsold items from Fung's account had been instructed to be sent to her home in New Jersey by Fung's mother. The RealReal has been in communication with both Agapov and the authorities regarding the stolen items.
Additionally, among the recovered stolen items returned to Fung were several high-value pieces, including a Gucci handbag, a Celine handbag, and Christian Louboutin shoes. Despite this, the total value of the stolen and now unsold items is estimated to be $31,000.
Aurora Agapov, who is the daughter of Andre Agapov, a Russian-American mining magnate and CEO of a gold mining company, is seeking damages not only for the market value of the unsold items but also specifically for the items that had already been sold. The total amount sought in damages for the sold items is at least $20,000.
The case has raised concerns among students as such incidents of theft within shared accommodations can create a tense and insecure environment. It remains a critical issue for both university administrations and the student body to address safeguarding personal property.
